Mike Nolan

Mike Nolan is a native of West Virginia and an Air Force Veteran. Mike served for over ten years as a pilot in both the F-16 and T-38 in assignments across the globe including combat missions as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Prior to founding Horizon Architecture, Mike practiced architecture in a variety of firms gaining extensive experience in a broad variety of projects including hands on experience as co-owner of a residential design-build firm. Mike founded Horizon Architecture to continue his mission of bringing thoughtful design and an unparalleled experience to his clients.

Along with his wife and Air Force Veteran, Sarah, and their daughters Molly and Eleanor, Mike resides in Iowa City and is an enthusiastic ambassador and proud transplant to this wonderful community and gives back as a board member for The Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP), Willowwind School and The New Pioneer Co-op.

Lena Michalek

Lena Michalek is a New Mexico native now residing in New Jersey. She is a forward-thinking architect committed to sustainability and user-focused design. She holds an M.Arch from the University of Kansas, alongside certificates in Historic Preservation and Project Management.

Lena continues to show her dedication to sustainable architecture through her LEED BD+C accreditation, reflecting her expertise in environmentally conscious design. Her passion for sustainability stems from her New Mexican upbringing, where she developed a profound appreciation for the environment and community. Currently exploring the East Coast while her husband completes his Ph.D., Lena eagerly anticipates the beauty of changing seasons, particularly the vibrant fall colors.

Lena is dedicated to utilizing her experience and voice in the profession to creating buildings that serve their users and communities.

David Houston

Design Consultant

Bachelor of Architecture – Southern University

With over 25 years of dedicated service to the world of architecture, David Houston is seasoned in the field of architecture, he breathes life into structures through his innovative design and meticulous attention to detail. He was reared in Des Moines, IA, graduated with a bachelors in architecture from Southern University.

He has experience in Commercial, Residential and Historical preservation, mid-rise and low-rise buildings as well as medical office buildings. He has been committed to shaping the environment in efficient and sustainable ways. He has created a nonprofit organization Homes 4 My Peeps, and holds the position as executive director. Our mission is to provide sustainable and efficient methods to blighted communities.

Scott McDonough

Project Manager

Bachelor of Business Administration– University of Iowa

Scott McDonough is a lifelong Iowa resident and graduate of the University of Iowa, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration. Prior to joining the Horizon team, Scott founded an esteemed building and remodeling business, McDonough Structures, which he led for over two decades. Under his leadership, McDonough Structures gained recognition for building sustainable homes of enduring quality. Scott brings his expertise in healthy housing, energy efficiency, and environmentally conscious building practices to his Project Management role at Horizon.

He is passionate about being involved in his community and is an active advocate with local non-profits. He has served on several volunteer boards with organizations including the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, the Englert Theater, and Habitat for Humanity. He also served on Iowa City’s Board of Appeals, from 2010 through 2023.

Architects and Builders are notorious for having a volatile relationship with each other. Scott’s background as a builder creates a unique opportunity to foster harmony during the entire project experience by applying insight and empathy where needed.

Rawya Osman

Rawya Osman is a passionate architect originally from Sudan. Her foundation in architecture was built in 2008 at the University of Khartoum. After completing her undergraduate studies and earned a Master of Science in Architectural Design from the same institution. Subsequently, between "2013-2021" she took on a part-time role as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Khartoum, and also taking a part-time role as an architectural designer working for UKCC and small private practices.

Rawya moved to the U.S. at the end of 2021 and began working as a designer at Horizon Architecture in Iowa City. There, her designs resonated deeply with both clients and colleagues, pushing her to continually refine her craft. Currently, she is pursuing her Master of Architecture at Iowa State University, blending past experiences with new perspectives and techniques.

On a personal front, Rawya is happily married, and this bond offers a grounding counterpoint to her professional endeavors. Her roots in Sudan and my experiences in the U.S. enable her to weave diverse cultural inspirations into my work, crafting designs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable.
