Muscatine County General Services Maintenance Building

Muscatine County General Services Maintenance Building

As part of the Facilities Master Plan, the new building provides a new home for the General Services Maintenance group and consolidates the county’s storage and service equipment within the central campus.

The maintenance group was previously housed in the Historic Sheriff’s Residence and Jail – an occupancy that was leading to excessive wear and tear on the listed landmark. With seasonal equipment and storage at the offsite Washington Street facility (located in the flood plain) a good deal of time was spent by personnel travelling back and forth between the facilities. Additionally, storing equipment in the flood prone area kept the county’s assets at continuous risk of water damage. The new facility combines storage, garage, tool and work areas, office and gathering space for General Services Staff. The building will also house the new home for the Muscatine County Volunteer Search and Rescue team in a climate controlled location proximate to the Mississippi River. Built for efficiency and durability, the building contains radiant heat throughout, insulated glazing and durable masonry, fiber cement and steel exterior cladding.

The building is situated to anchor the corner of 5th Street and Walnut Street, a location previously covered by a large asphalt parking lot. The adjacent geothermal field remains as green space in preparation for future renovations of the Historic Sheriff’s Residence and Jail as a new home for the Muscatine County Historic Preservation Commission. The project was completed in June 2020.
