Davis County Courthouse Accessible Entry Addition

Davis County Courthouse Accessible Entry Addition

New accessibility features were added to the courthouse.

The Davis County Courthouse, constructed in 1877, holds a special place in history. It is not only individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but it contributes to the charm of the Bloomfield Square historic district. In an effort to enhance accessibility, a new entrance has been added to the courthouse, adhering to the Secretary of the Interior’s guidelines and standards for making additions to historic structures.

The new entrance features a wheelchair lift and seamlessly connects to the courthouse through an existing opening. The archway of this opening was preserved, leaving parts of the original stone exposed on the interior to clearly delineate the boundary between old and new. Additionally, the exterior and roof materials closely match the color and texture of the original building, harmonizing with its historic character. To maintain the courthouse’s overall architectural integrity the massing and decorative elements of the addition are minimal, ensuring it does not disrupt the courthouse’s overall composition and to further distinguish it from the original structure.

In addition to the new entrance, the site layout was reworked to include accessible parking spaces and paths adjacent to the entrance, enhancing overall accessibility.
